Review: Mosaic Lagoon Lodge

What’s the lodge in a nutshell?

Approaching Mosaic Lagoon Lodge feels like the start of a classic African adventure – at least for a few kilometres. The dusty road winds through the bush, and as our Volkswagen rattled along, we couldn’t help but wish for a sturdy Land Rover. But the reward is worth it. Situated between the shimmering Klein River Lagoon and the rugged Overberg mountains, Mosaic Lagoon Lodge offers a different kind of luxury. Founded by Breese and Kathryn Johnson in 2002 with a vision to restore biodiversity, the lodge later passed to local resident Maryke De Villiers and her family. With just a few suites under ancient milkwood trees, the lodge delivers an intimate, eco-conscious escape deeply connected to its natural surroundings.

What are the rooms like?

Mosaic Lagoon Lodge feels like an exclusive retreat with just five safari-style suites. Each suite is its own separate structure, thoughtfully designed to harmonise with the surrounding milkwood grove and the Hermanus Lagoon.

Constructed using local limestone under thatched roofs, the suites feel rustic but not bare bones, and complement the natural setting. Inside, we were treated to a king-size bed draped with mosquito netting. Our restful night’s sleep was lulled by the sounds of nature.

Shower under the stars

The en-suite bathrooms come with both indoor and outdoor showers – we naturally chose the alfresco option because, really, can you call it an African adventure without a bit of open-air nudity? There’s also a generous bathtub for long, lazy soaks. Each suite’s private deck serves up panoramic views of the lagoon and Overberg Mountains, an ideal backdrop for a sundowner gin and tonic. And in a stroke of excellent planning, a mini bottle of gin is already at your disposal.

Indoor, outdoor living

Amenities include free Wi-Fi, and complimentary stocked minibars. The design blends indoor and outdoor living, with large glass doors and windows that flood the space with natural light and offer uninterrupted vistas of the surrounding landscape. The use of natural materials and neutral tones creates a calming atmosphere, along with accommodating and friendly staff.

What else?

Mosaic Lagoon Lodge is steeped in local heritage. Originally part of a farm, it was transformed into a boutique retreat that honours the Overberg’s rich biodiversity and history. Every corner of the property reflects a commitment to sustainability and a deep respect for its surroundings, from the locally-sourced materials used in construction to the conservation projects the lodge supports.

Daily tailored menus

The restaurant and bar is the hub and heart of the resort and provide the Lodge’s culinary offerings. Ingredients are sourced directly from the surrounding farmland and the Overberg’s coast. The menu highlights the region’s seasonal produce and changes daily. You can enjoy dishes like freshly-caught seafood, artisanal cheeses and farm-to-table salads. We felt very cared for, having been asked if there are any specific foods that we don’t like, or if we have any particular favourites. The general impression being that the staff go out of their way to cater to your needs.

Arriving in time for a late lunch, the obviously talented chef served us a delicious chicken sallad and kept our glasses topped up with Mosaic Lagoon Lodge’s house wine from local winery Raka Wine.

Later in the day, after our Fynbos excursion (more on that later!) and an afternoon nap, we headed back to the restaurant for dinner. Again, pleasantly surprised by the chef’s abilities. The three course, and all-inclusive dinner had several options for starters and mains. A highlight was a bright red thai curry clam soup. Rusic plating sure, but both dishes offered deep and full flavours.

Starting the day at Mosaic Lodge is as serene as it gets. Given the small number of guests on the premises at any given time, breakfast is a quiet affair. And we mean that in the most positive way. The service starts with juices, coffee, yoghurt and homemade granola as part of the cold breakfast. If you are so inclined, the hot part continues with a range of sausages, eggs of any style, made to order, and juicy bacon. All enjoyed while gazing out over the Hermanus lagoon and estuary.

So much to do, so little time …

Apart from stunning views, good food and comfortable beds, Mosaic Lodge offers a plethora of activities. Guests can kayak or stand-up paddleboard on the Klein River Lagoon, enjoy guided beach excursions or hike through fynbos-studded trails. Birdwatchers can spot rare species like African oystercatchers, while wine lovers can join private tours to explore the famed Hemel-en-Aarde wine route. For the adventurous, shark cage diving is also offered. In season and for the less adrenaline driven guest, joining the whale watching excursions are a must.

With no Big Five to chase, the lodge swaps roaring lions for rustling flora on a fynbos safari – a 4×4 deep dive into the Cape’s most biodiverse plant kingdom. Led by the ever-smiling Vitalis, whose knowledge of the landscape and conservation efforts is as vast as the terrain itself, we rattled through the bush in a Land Cruiser, learning how locals help restore fynbos by turning invasive species into firewood and using natural remedies to combat root extinction.

By allowing locals to harvest invasive plants for firewood and using natural remedies to combat root extinction, the indigenous vegetation is thriving once more. With the steady thrum of the Land Cruiser’s diesel V8, we ventured deeper into nature, learning about the role of fire in fynbos regeneration and how these plants have been used for centuries in medicine, cooking and distilling.

No safari – whether a game drive or this more vegetarian-friendly version – is complete without a tailgate snack stop. Vitalis played the perfect host, laying out cheeses, charcuterie and whatever we fancied to drink.

For pure relaxation after a day in the bush, the Milkwood Spa offers treatments inspired by indigenous botanicals.

What’s our final take?

If you’ve already ticked off the Big Five, Mosaic Lagoon Lodge offers a different kind of adventure – intimate, tranquil and refreshingly offbeat. Don’t expect the grandeur of a traditional African game lodge; instead, you’ll find impeccable style, comfort and a deeply personal touch. The staff seem to know what you want before you do, adding a seamless ease to every moment. Lush green landscapes roll into bright white sandy beaches, contrasting vividly with the deep blue sea. Breathing in the crisp, clean air is nothing short of revitalising. Though our stay was brief, the chef ensured we were well-fed and content. From this stunning base, whale watching promises to be nothing less than spectacular.

What’s the region like?

The Western Cape province in South Africa is a captivating mosaic of contrasts, from the vibrant urban buzz of Cape Town to the serene vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and the rugged beauty of the Cederberg mountains. Cape Town, with its iconic Table Mountain backdrop and bustling waterfront, pulses with cultural dynamism and creativity. Beyond the city’s lively streets, the province unfolds with diverse landscapes: the lush Cape Winelands, the pristine beaches of the Garden Route and the stark beauty of the Karoo desert. Historical landmarks like Robben Island and the Cape of Good Hope add depth to the region’s rich tapestry. The Western Cape’s culinary scene is equally eclectic, blending traditional African flavours with international influences, while its festivals and art scene reflect a vibrant, cosmopolitan spirit.
