Franschhoek, South Africa

Leeu House

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Leeu House has serious curb appeal. Right on Franschhoek’s high street, it’s impossible to miss with its whitewashed Cape Dutch-style façade and thatched roof framed by huge oak trees. This place is part of the Leeu Collection, owned by entrepreneur Analjit Singh, who didn’t just buy one property – he picked up the neighbouring ones to create this spacious boutique hotel. Inside, the vibe is elegant yet homely, with classy modern furnishings mixed with hand-picked artworks everywhere you look. It’s a 12-room hideaway, but you’re right in the heart of the action, with the village’s best restaurants, galleries and shops just a short stroll away.

What are the rooms like?

The rooms at Leeu House feel like a warm embrace. They’re decked out in neutral tones, with super-comfy beds you won’t want to leave and sisal carpets underfoot. Big windows bring in plenty of light, and the decor – like handmade lampstands and cool original art – adds a personal touch. You get all the mod-cons too, like air-conditioning, a minibar and a big TV. The bathrooms are lush, with heated marble floors and massive rain showers, and some rooms even have tubs. The upstairs rooms are the ones to book if you’re into mountain views, but honestly, there’s not a dud room in the house.

What else?

Beyond the comfy rooms, Leeu House gives you plenty of reasons to stay put. The pool out back is the perfect spot to chill, surrounded by palms and a manicured garden, and the poolside bar makes sure you never have to go far for a drink. Inside, the bar-lounge has a cosy, living room vibe, with a roaring fire in winter and a chessboard that practically dares you to unwind. Dining is intimate too, with The Conservatory serving seasonal dishes straight from the hotel’s own gardens. And if you’re after something a little more special, hop in the shuttle to Leeu Estates for a wine tasting or a proper spa day.

What’s the town like?

Franschhoek might be small, but its allure is anything but. Situated in South Africa’s Western Cape, this town is the understated jewel of the Cape Winelands, perfect for those in the know. Forget the tourist traps – Franschhoek is for discerning travellers who appreciate fine wine, gourmet dining, and the art of slow living. Its French Huguenot roots lend it a chic European flair, but with an unmistakably South African edge. Michelin-quality restaurants, boutique vineyards, and galleries offering real craftsmanship await. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, Franschhoek serves up laid-back luxury that hits all the right notes – if you know where to look.
