BGR is a minimalist burger spot that keeps it straightforward: cheeseburgers, hamburgers and the lettuce-wrapped Cardio option for the bun-averse. Their beef blend is freshly ground daily, hand-shaped and cooked with a sprinkle of salt – no frills, just flavour. The buns are baked without preservatives, using real milk, giving them a soft, slightly sweet finish that’s perfect against the beef. When you order, the fun begins. You can build your perfect burger with their free toppings, known as The Works. We’re talking grilled onions, mushrooms, jalapeños, crispy bacon and more, with no extra charge. The BGR sauce? Amazing. Dip your fries in it or slather it on your burger – it’s a must-try.

Hudsons brings an American diner vibe to Johannesburg. If you’re into juicy burgers paired with ice-cold craft beers, this is your kind of spot. It’s the kind of place where the vibe is as good as the food – think cheerful energy, a stylish yet unpretentious setup and a menu that gets your mouth watering just by reading it. The Hadida, loaded with beef, biltong, cheddar and chutney, is a must-try. The Samurai is also one of our favourites, if you are looking for something a bit more adventurous – a 200g slow-roasted pork belly burger with hoisin sauce. Also try some unique fries, such as avo fries and their disco fries, with creamy mozzarella and peri-peri.

If you’re looking for a burger that’s anything but ordinary, Dukes Burgers in Melville is where you need to be. Since 2010, this spot has taken gourmet burgers to the next level, offering a unique take on classic comfort food in one of Johannesburg’s trendiest neighborhoods. Their menu is a playground for burger lovers, with options like The Mohican, topped with caramelized onions, crispy bacon and mayonnaise. For an adventurous twist, try something like The Lady Marmalade, featuring brie cheese and a sweet marmalade spread. The atmosphere here is laid-back, fitting in perfectly with the Melville vibe, ideal if you are in the mood for a casual bite.

The Grillhouse is a Johannesburg institution. Since 1994, this iconic spot has been serving up world-class meat and we’re not just talking about steaks – they’ve carved out a reputation for making every dining experience exceptional. The Grillhouse is best known for its steaks, but the burgers are just as worthy of attention. The beef patties are made with the same care and quality that have built the restaurant’s reputation. With locations in Rosebank, Sandton and Melrose Arch, The Grillhouse lets you pick your preferred setting. We love the Sandton setting – upscale but still feels welcoming, with floor to ceiling windows that offer amazing views of the city.

Fresh Earth Café in Blairgowrie is proof that healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring. If you’re looking for a plant-based burger, Fresh Earth Café is the spot. Stepping into Fresh Earth Café, you’ll immediately feel the welcoming and lively vibe. The interior is warm, simple and inviting, with natural wood finishes, greenery and ample natural light. The vegan burger is a very popular choice, featuring a plant-based patty made from a blend of beans and vegetables, topped with avocado, sprouts and a tangy vegan mayo. We also love their Table of Abundance – a daily harvest table, served buffet style, with everything made fresh on the day, including bakes, curries, wild rice, beautiful salads, fritters and interesting sides.
