Southern Africa • Eat & drink • The guide to Stellenbosch’s 5 essential bakeries (and must-try pastries)
When you think of Stellenbosch, wine might be the first thing that comes to mind, but this charming town has another secret: Stellenbosch is home to some of the best bakeries you’ll find anywhere. Whether you’re after a perfectly flaky croissant or something a bit more adventurous, Stellenbosch offers a range of spots where you can satisfy your cravings. In this guide, we’re diving into the Stellenbosch bakeries that stand out, sharing their must-try treats and why each one is worth the visit.
01
Schoon is one of Stellenbosch’s most loved bakeries, the name means beautiful in Dutch and that’s what you can expect from every loaf, pastry and sandwich they offer. Their sourdough bread is a local favourite – crusty on the outside, airy on the inside and baked fresh daily using locally sourced ingredients. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, we highly recommend you try their honey nut cruffin, a perfect balance of buttery pastry and home-made creme patisserie, topped with cinnamon sugar, honey-lemon drizzle and a sprinkle of nuts – simply delicious!

Famous for its Portuguese-inspired Pasteis de Nata, Vadas Pasteis de Nata & Café is a must-visit when in Stellenbosch. These custard tarts, with their creamy centres and flaky crusts, are a must-try and Vadas Pasteis de Nata & Café are masters in creating these beauties. But don’t let the Natas steal all the attention; this café also whips up fresh breads and snacks that make it an ideal stop for a light meal or a treat on the go. Their laid-back vibe matches the delicious simplicity of their food. We love their café located on Spier Wine Farm, but if you are only venturing in town they also have a café in Ryneveld Street.

The name Meraki means to do something with soul, creativity or love and this café truly lives up to its name. It’s bright and airy, with rustic wooden tables, pops of greenery and a vibe that instantly makes you want to stay a while. Their cinnamon bun is the stuff of legends, soft and generously spiced, perfect for starting your day or a sweet pick-me-up. Their carrot cake, with its generous frosting is also a treat worth trying! Aside from sweets, Meraki Café also serves up a solid breakfast menu, complete with freshly baked bread and high-quality coffee.

Mila & Von is a bakery with a touch of elegance but without the pretentiousness. Known for their artisanal cakes and beautifully presented pastries, this is the place to go if you’re after something special. We can’t get enough of their carrot cake, not only is it presented beautifully, but the flavour and texture of the cake & frosting is out of this world. The lemon meringue is also worth mentioning, with its zesty filling and delicate, airy meringue. The vibe here is relaxed yet refined, making it a lovely spot for a mid-morning treat or an afternoon catch-up with friends.

A quirky name for a quirky spot, The Blue Crane & The Butterfly is a Stellenbosch bakery that’s all about attention to detail. Known for their delicate pastries and perfectly brewed coffee, this is the kind of place where everything feels handmade and personal. Their raspberry tart is our favourite – light, not overly sweet and filled with fresh fruit flavour. This spot is also popular for their buttery croissants, which many claim are the best in town. The bakery’s location is a bit tucked away, which adds to its charm and makes it feel like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.
