The Huguenot Memorial Museum in Franschhoek takes you on a journey through the history of the French Huguenots who settled in the region. This museum, located next to the Huguenot Monument, showcases the influence these French settlers had on the Cape’s culture, wine and farming. The museum itself is an excellent example of traditional Cape Dutch architecture. Inside, you’ll find exhibits featuring artefacts, furniture and documents that tell the story of these early settlers. But the real standout for us is the Huguenot Monument, located outside in the museum’s beautiful gardens – a striking structure that symbolises the Huguenots’ quest for religious freedom.

The space itself is beautifully curated, with clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic that lets the artwork shine. Sculptures, paintings and mixed-media pieces fill the space and every visit offers something new, thanks to its changing exhibitions. We also love the outdoor sculptures that blend art and nature in a truly serene setting.

For something completely different, the Franschhoek Motor Museum offers a fascinating dive into the world of classic cars. Located on the L’Ormarins Estate, the museum houses an impressive collection of over 220 vehicles, ranging from vintage cars to modern classics. The collection spans over 100 years of motoring history, showcasing the evolution of automobile design, the 1898 Beeston motor tricycle is a must-see! But we think this spot is special thanks to the way it highlights how design – whether it’s the curves of a 1950s classic or the sharp lines of a contemporary sports car – has shaped our world. Even if you’re not a car person, the craftsmanship and attention to detail in every vehicle will have you appreciating these works of art on wheels.
