Leeu Passant, part of the Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, located on Leeu Estates is a standout in Franschhoek. Known for its small-batch, handcrafted wines, Leeu Passant is the brainchild of winemaking duo Chris and Andrea Mullineux, celebrated for their focus on terroir-driven wines. The name Leeu Passant translates to roaming lion, symbolising the winery’s commitment to exploring the best vineyards across South Africa. While the winery is located in Franschhoek, many of their grapes are sourced from historic vineyards across South Africa, combining old-world and new-world innovation. Our favourite wine is the complex and flavourful Cabernet Sauvignon.

Paserene is a boutique winery that prides itself on authenticity and a strong sense of place. Owned by Martin Smith and Ndavhe Mareda, Paserene focuses on creating luxury wines that reflect the unique terroir of Franschhoek. The name Paserene comes from the Latin word for swallows, symbolising freedom and travel, the swallow is also present on their flagship wine the Marathon, a Cabernet Sauvignon that you have to try when visiting the farm. The striking modern architecture of their tasting lounge, with large windows and contemporary design, provides an unforgettable backdrop as you sip on some of the region’s finest wines.

Originally part of the historic Huguenot Estate, La Cotte, Chamonix boasts some of the highest planted vineyards in the Cape. This winery has a rich history dating back to the 17th century and a unique underground cellar where many of their wines are aged. The cool mountain climate and ancient soils create an ideal setting for producing their renowned Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. We love Chamonix not only for the delicious Chardonnay but also for the overall experience when visiting the farm. Whether it’s a stay at the Forest Lodge, a meal at the Arkeste restaurant or simply a wine tasting and cellar tour, we felt every aspect of this winery was charming.

Rickety Bridge Estate is a winery with a history dating back to 1797. The winery was originally part of the La Provence farm, one of the first French Huguenot farms in Franschhoek. Today, it features a modern boutique-style winery and the iconic Paulina’s Restaurant, which pays homage to the original owner of the estate, Paulina de Villiers. From casual tastings to guided cellar tours and picnics in the vineyards, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy at this wine estate. We recommend you try the Crossover Pinotage, a unique South African varietal and one of the flagship wines of Rickety Bridge Estate.

If you love your wine with a side of breathtaking views, Haute Cabrière is the place to be. Haute Cabrière is a family-led winery with deep roots in Franschhoek’s wine valley. Specialising in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the estate’s approach is all about showcasing the true expression of these grapes through both still and sparkling wines. Their Pierre Jourdan range of MCC (Méthode Cap Classique) is particularly popular, offering an excellent introduction to South Africa’s take on Champagne. We love having a meal at the glass-encased terrace restaurant, which offers breathtaking views of the valley and you cannot visit the farm without doing a tour of the underground cellar; it gives you an intimate glimpse at the winemaking process.
