The Uitkyk Trail is a favourite among hikers in Franschhoek for its panoramic views and moderate challenge. The trail, about 6.7 km long, leads you up the slopes of the Wemmershoek Mountains, rewarding your efforts with stunning views of the Franschhoek Valley. Along the way, you’ll pass through a variety of fynbos vegetation and might spot local wildlife, including small antelope and a variety of bird species. The name Uitkyk means lookout and once you reach the top, it’s easy to see why!

Looking for a peaceful, scenic stroll that won’t leave you gasping for air? The Berg River Dam trail is a flat, easy-going 10 km loop that’s perfect for a relaxed day outdoors. The trail takes you around the dam, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains mirrored in the water. The trail is mostly flat, making it suitable for all fitness levels, including families looking for a more relaxed outdoor activity. We think this is the perfect trail for visitors who want to experience the unique fauna and flora of the region, without having to put aside a whole day – a few hours will do! It’s a great trail for a laid-back hike, with plenty of spots to stop and simply enjoy the silence and scenery.

Up for a real challenge? The Perdekop Trail is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re ready to tackle a tough 13 km hike, it’ll reward you with some of the most beautiful views in Franschhoek. As you climb through the rugged terrain, you’ll feel a real sense of adventure. The trail takes you all the way to the summit of Perdekop, which sits at 1,575 metres above sea level. Up here, you’re treated to jaw-dropping 360-degree views – well worth the effort. This is the kind of trail where you want to come prepared: sturdy boots, a backpack filled with snacks and plenty of water. It’s tough, but the feeling of standing at the top is unbeatable!

If you’re short on time but still want to sneak in a little outdoor adventure, Cat’s Path is your go-to trail. At just 2.6 km, it’s perfect for a quick escape into nature without breaking too much of a sweat. The trail takes you through the lower sections of Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, offering gentle inclines and gorgeous fynbos scenery at every turn. You’ll get a taste of the Franschhoek wilderness without the commitment of a long, demanding hike. Along the way, you’ll learn about the region’s history, including its early settlers and the elephants that once roamed the area. The trail is a great way to experience the natural and historical heritage of Franschhoek.

The La Motte Hiking Trail offers a scenic and educational hike through the La Motte Wine Estate. This 5-kilometre circular route starts at the La Motte Tasting Room and takes you through vineyards, a protea garden and indigenous flora. The trail is moderate in difficulty, with a few gentle hills and offers lovely views of the valley. If you’re into birdwatching, keep your eyes peeled for the Cape Sugarbird as you walk! What makes this trail extra special is what comes after the hike – La Motte’s wine tasting room and restaurant are waiting for you when you finish. It’s the perfect trail for those who want to balance their love of the outdoors with a bit of indulgence at the end.
