The Linden Market

The Linden Market is a seasonal local favourite in Johannesburg, hosted quarterly in the lush Emmarentia Botanical Gardens. This is the go-to market if you are on the hunt for handmade ceramics, boutique clothing and artisanal décor. What makes this market stand out are the extras: live acoustic music that’s perfect for lounging on the grass, yoga classes under the trees and the heartwarming Date-a-Dog initiative that encourages pet adoptions. Each market follows a fun theme, the Boho Winter theme was a hit, which adds to the lively atmosphere and keeps things exciting for each visit.

Fourways Farmers Market

Set within the expansive and picturesque Modderfontein Reserve, the Fourways Farmers Market is a must-visit for a laid-back Sunday in Johannesburg. The market relocated here from its original Fourways location to accommodate its growing popularity, offering a serene environment in one of Gauteng’s largest private nature reserves. Think of a day spent amidst lakes, hills and indigenous grasslands, coupled with the aromas of gourmet food and the buzz of happy chatter. This market features over 100 vendors selling locally crafted products – some of the best artisanal cheeses and gourmet street food the city’s markets have to offer! Seating options include cosy hay bales or shaded grassy patches perfect for picnics.

Field Market

Set under a canopy of trees in Parkmore’s Field & Study Park, the Field Market feels like a hidden gem. This is a family-friendly market, with plenty for kids, including a playground, nature scavenger hunts and activities like horse rides and ceramic painting. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome too and water points are provided for them. We loved the variety of locally handcrafted items, all beautifully displayed and the food options here are excellent, including specialty coffee roasters and boutique wineries. The market has a slow, relaxed pace. We grabbed our gourmet pancakes and coffee and found a spot on the grass, perfect for a picnic under the leafy trees and enjoyed the live acoustic music.

Bus Stop 7 Open Air Market

For something a bit off the beaten path, head over to Busstop7 Open-Air Market, a countryside escape just outside Pretoria, where weekends transform into a celebration of local talent, food and community. This unique market has over 150 vendors showcasing the best of South African craftsmanship. We loved the beautifully crafted leather goods and hand-poured candles and of course the food. You can’t visit this market and not try one of the South African market favourites – the classic boerewors roll! The market is family-friendly too, offering live music and activities for kids, with plenty of shaded seating to relax.
