Review: Belly of the Beast

What’s the restaurant in a nutshell?

Belly of the Beast is an intimate, 30-seater restaurant that offers a refined yet unpretentious tasting menu experience. Co-founded by chefs Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart, it follows a nose-to-tail philosophy, ensuring that every part of the animal is used in their dishes. The open-plan kitchen allows you to watch the chefs at work, adding an engaging dynamic to the meal. With its moody interior, dark colour palette and minimalist design, the space feels both luxurious and modern. Service is warm but professional, with the team taking the time to explain the menu and check for dietary preferences before the feast begins. With just one sitting per evening, dinners unfold leisurely, lasting several indulgent hours.

What are the signature dishes?

As the menu changes frequently, diners surrender to the creativity of the chefs. As the restaurant serves everyone in one-sitting per night, everybody arrives at the same time and get served simultaneously. Belly of the Beast does not operate as an à la carte venue, but serves a tasting menu with optional wine pairings.

Starting off strong

The evening starts with an amuse-bouche consisting of a juicy oyster served in its shell with a refreshing pineapple salsa and thinly sliced leek, followed by a beautifully executed dish with delightfully tender mussels with pickled fennel and deep fried crisp pieces of flatbread. Both dishes are chased down with a green and flinty wine from Vagabond winery.

Rich and tasty breads

Another highlight is the ensuing bread service, which is unusually elaborate, consisting of home made rolls – roosterkoek – that arrive out of the oven, along with vetkoek – a traditional deep fried bread roll with a consistency similar to doughnuts or the Dutch oliebollen. The different breads are dipped in a rich hummus topped with deep fried crisp onions.

Head to tail cuisine

The chefs enjoy experimenting, utilizing all parts of an animal for the dishes. This particular evening we are treated to a braaied (grilled) chicken skewer that consists of different cuts of the humble chicken, crowned with chicken hearts. If you are hesitant about devouring the innards of an animal, chicken might be a good way to start, as the heart served is as tender as it is delicious.

More than expected

In true South African style, one can almost always be sure to leave any eatery well fed. The same applies to Belly of the Beast, where the six main dishes are complemented by a number of little (not that little, really!) snacks and tidbits to carry us over between dishes. One of which was a visually appealing – and very tasty – vegetable sallad with lightly dressed crudités and feta cheese.

The finale

The dessert comes in two acts, starting with a bite sized cheese dish with goat cheese squeezed between two homemade layers of a cookie with jam. Delightfully simplistic and packing a lot of taste.

This is then followed by blinz – traditionally a jewish pancake dish – Belly of the Beast style, served in vanilla custard, fresh berries and ice cream. To us it is clear that the chef’s passion lies in savoury dishes and not in desserts as it is the least memorable dish of an otherwise perfect evening.

Drinks, anyone?

If you so desire, the tasting menu and evening can be kicked off with one or more of the restaurant’s signature cocktails.

The wine selection is exceptional, offering a showcase of South Africa’s small and independent wineries. Throughout the meal, we are served a selection of reds and whites, each thoughtfully paired to complement the flavours on our plates. Our sommelier, both knowledgeable and passionate, with insightful commentary on each pour.

We loved the white blend from Vagabond wines, refreshingly flinty and green, the rich Cinsault from nearby Stellenbosh and the Koedoe Cabernet Sauvignon from Lowerland winery, to name a few.

What’s our final take?

Belly of the Beast is an invitation to embrace the unexpected, resulting in a dining experience that lingers long after the last bite. There’s definitely a sense of occasion at Belly of the Beast and nothing feels sloppy. Everything just happens with a bit more joy and conviviality, often lost in eateries at this level. Considering the amount of food, pretty platings, ever smiling service and rich flavours on the whole, a visit to ‘The Belly’ is well worth it!

What’s the city like?

Cape Town, spread out beneath the iconic Table Mountain, is a vibrant metropolis that captivates with its urban buzz and natural beauty. From the bustling Victoria & Alfred Waterfront to the colourful Bo-Kaap district with its cobblestone streets and vibrant houses, each neighbourhood offers a unique glimpse into the city’s rich cultural tapestry. Sea Point and Green Point are beloved for their seaside promenades and diverse dining options, while De Waterkant charms with its narrow streets lined with trendy boutiques and cafes. The Central Business District (CBD) buzzes with business activity and historic landmarks, contrasting with the lush greenery of Gardens and the upscale residential vibes of Clifton and Camps Bay, renowned for their stunning beaches and glamorous lifestyle. Cape Town, located in South Africa’s Western Cape province, seamlessly blends modern sophistication with an unmistakable African flair.
