Review: Dorp Hotel

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Set high above the city bowl on the slopes of Signal Hill, Dorp Hotel is unlike any other hotel in Cape Town – and perhaps like no other in the world. It feels less like checking in and more like stepping into someone’s elaborate daydream. That someone is founder Gail Behr, whose romantic, eccentric vision shapes everything from the layered interiors to the lavender-scented air. The name Dorp means ‘village’ in Afrikaans, and that’s the spirit it channels – a hillside sanctuary of bougainvillaea-covered walls, secret staircases and hidden courtyards. Overlooking Bo-Kaap and the harbour, it draws creatives, writers and wanderers who value beauty, privacy and a sense of remove.

What are the rooms like?

At Dorp Hotel, uniformity is intentionally avoided. Every room is different – in layout, mood and detail. Some are airy and expansive, others intimate and cocooning. There are rooftop lookouts, garden-level nooks and larger suites designed for longer stays. The hotel’s layout, spread across a cluster of buildings on Signal Hill, means rooms are accessed via pathways, steps and leafy courtyards rather than corridors. It feels more like a hillside village than a hotel. The main building is the Dorp hotel. Down the hill it turns into Onder-Dorp, the lower Dorp, which houses the self-catering private villas, large suites and small rooms with private terraces.

What unites the rooms is their supremely personal atmosphere – a mix of antique furniture, layered textiles, handmade notes and a sense that everything has been curated rather than styled provides a feeling of a home of an eccentric older relative rather than a hotel.

A room for every kind of traveller

The range of accommodation is generous. There are single rooms that suit solo travellers and shorter stays, garden rooms that open directly onto courtyards and lavender-filled terraces. The larger Onder-Dorp suites offer separate living spaces, dining areas and in some cases, kitchens are also available. These long-stay suites are especially popular with artists, writers and remote workers looking for a slow, quiet base in the city.

For those chasing postcard views, many rooms come with balconies or verandas that overlook Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and the harbour. Some include fireplaces for winter stays. Others are designed to be thrown open to summer breezes. Whatever your fancy, Dorp can usually find you a room that fits your requirements.

The iconic Tower Room

The Tower Room is one of the hotel’s most sought-after spaces and a favourite among returning guests. Surrounded by windows on all sides, it offers sweeping, cinematic views of Cape Town, Table Mountain and the Atlantic and a feeling of being entirely removed from the world below. Inside, the aesthetic is consistent with the rest of Dorp. It’s romantic, peaceful and slightly eccentric.

Details that matter

Across all rooms, you’ll find a deliberate absence of modern hotel tropes. No television. No minibar. No keycards. Instead: worn rugs, piles of books, handwritten labels and fresh flowers in mismatched vases. Bathrooms often feature clawfoot tubs or walk-in showers, with fluffy robes and simple, elegant fittings.

Some rooms have four-poster beds. Others are tucked under pitched ceilings or open onto hidden corners of the garden. It’s not luxury in the conventional sense – it’s something softer, more thoughtful. There may be the occasional creak in the floorboards or a lamp at a charming tilt, but it all feeds into the unpolished, lived-in atmosphere that makes staying here feel so human.

A place to linger

Dorp’s rooms have a habit of shifting your plans. Many guests arrive expecting to explore Cape Town and end up spending their days reading, writing or simply staring out at the view. Whether you’re here for a few nights or settling in for a slow month, the rooms invite you to take your time – to sleep in, to watch the weather roll in over Table Mountain, to rediscover stillness.

What else?

The Salon is Dorp Hotel’s social and culinary heart, serving a menu of comforting, home-style meals. Standouts include the twice-baked cheese soufflé, spinach and ricotta ravioli with burnt-sage butter and the signature rotisserie roast chicken.

There are also toasted sandwiches, crisp salads and generous mains like fillet steak béarnaise and vegetable curry. Desserts are equally nostalgic, with homemade vanilla ice cream and a classic milk tart. While the hotel doesn’t hold a liquor licence, guests are welcome to bring their own.

The gardens and shared spaces

Terraced gardens wrap around the property, planted with bougainvillaea, roses, citrus trees and wild herbs. There are shaded benches, trickling fountains and corners to disappear into. Inside, shared lounges are lit by candles and lined with books, where mismatched antiques and floral upholstery all conspire to slow the pace.

Signs bearing the phrase ‘check your privilege’ appear discreetly throughout. We weren’t quite sure what to make of them at first – whether they were playful or pointed – but after a few days at Dorp, our interpretation settled in. It felt like a gentle nudge to show up with humility and openness. According to founder Behr, it’s simply a reminder to mind your manners – a quiet provocation that fits the hotel’s spirit of wit, rebellion and thoughtfulness.

The service

Service is warm and personal, delivered by a team who dress in signature light pink huisies – traditional linen housecoats – and do things the Dorp way. That means D for Decency, O for Originality, R for Respect and P for Psycho.

Staff are attentive but never stiff, letting their personalities shine through. One afternoon, we even heard spontaneous singing drift from the Salon mid-service. Like the hotel itself, the team here are full of character – and characters.

What’s our final take?

We can’t think of a better place to stay if originality is your thing. Dorp Hotel provides a feeling of a well-appointed, cosy but quirky home with plenty of personality and idiosyncrasies. Judging by looking at fellow guests, our hunch is that Dorp attracts a certain type of clientele that in itself enhances the old private stately home-vibe. The place’s location at the very end of a very steep street may seem a little isolated – and in a way it is. But the thing is, you don’t necessarily want to leave the hotel that much. And when you do, Cape Town is right there beneath you in its lively and vibrant glory.

What’s the city like?

Cape Town, spread out beneath the iconic Table Mountain, is a vibrant metropolis that captivates with its urban buzz and natural beauty. From the bustling Victoria & Alfred Waterfront to the colourful Bo-Kaap district with its cobblestone streets and vibrant houses, each neighbourhood offers a unique glimpse into the city’s rich cultural tapestry. Sea Point and Green Point are beloved for their seaside promenades and diverse dining options, while De Waterkant charms with its narrow streets lined with trendy boutiques and cafes. The Central Business District (CBD) buzzes with business activity and historic landmarks, contrasting with the lush greenery of Gardens and the upscale residential vibes of Clifton and Camps Bay, renowned for their stunning beaches and glamorous lifestyle. Cape Town, located in South Africa’s Western Cape province, seamlessly blends modern sophistication with an unmistakable African flair.
