Everard Read Gallery

Everard Read, Africa’s oldest commercial art gallery, has been a cornerstone of Johannesburg’s art landscape since 1913. Located in Rosebank, this gallery occupies a striking post-modern building. Its exhibitions range from traditional South African masterpieces to cutting-edge contemporary works, featuring prominent and emerging local artists alongside selected international creators. What makes a visit here special is its adjacent sister space, the CIRCA Gallery, an architectural marvel recognized globally for its design. CIRCA’s rooftop deck offers stunning views over Johannesburg’s leafy suburbs – a perfect spot to reflect on the art you’ve seen.

Goodman Gallery

Goodman Gallery’s reputation in Johannesburg precedes it and for good reason. When we think of powerful, contemporary art, it’s hard not to think of the Goodman Gallery, which has been pushing boundaries since 1966. As one of the leading galleries for politically charged and socially relevant art, Goodman has become a space where art meets activism. Under the leadership of Liza Essers since 2008, Goodman Gallery has expanded its scope, connecting South African artists with a global audience. It represents major figures like William Kentridge and David Goldblatt, while also promoting emerging artists. The gallery is notable for initiatives like South-South, which fosters dialogues between artists from the Global South.

Aspire Art

Aspire Art is a unique platform in Johannesburg that connects collectors with exceptional modern and contemporary African art. Established in 2016, this gallery focuses on showcasing both black modernist and contemporary pieces. We enjoyed the In the Eye of the Beholder exhibition that highlights perspectives from celebrated artists like Walter Battiss and Ndikhumbule Ngqinambi. Alongside these events and exhibitions, Aspire Art provides extensive art advisory services, such as valuations and collection management. If you’re intrigued by the intersection of investment and art appreciation, be sure to visit Aspire Art.

Johannesburg Art Gallery

The Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) is one of those places that’s impossible to miss if you’re in the city. This is the largest public gallery on the African continent, boasting an eclectic collection of art. The gallery houses masterpieces from renowned artists such as Auguste Rodin, Pablo Picasso, Gerard Sekoto and Ezrom Legae, alongside an extensive selection of South African works dating back to the 19th century. Designed by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, its grand structure is a historical landmark in itself.

Gallery Momo

Gallery Momo is one of Johannesburg’s hidden gems and we’ve always found something exhilarating about it. Located in the heart of Parktown North, this contemporary art space was founded in 2002 by Monna Mokoena, South Africa’s first Black-owned contemporary art gallery. We’re drawn to Gallery Momo’s impressive artist roster, including names like Mary Sibande, whose powerful work explores the intersection of race, class and identity and Ayana V. Jackson, whose photography offers a nuanced exploration of African and diasporic histories.
